Belarus is a landlocked country, situated in Eastern Europe, and has borders with five countries: Russia, Ukraine Poland, Lithuania & Latvia. Belarus has a moderate continental climate, with cool humid winters and warm summers.

Belarus is a member of the Eurasian Economic Community, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, the international Non-Aligned Movement since 1998, Organization on Security and Cooperation in Europe, & UN since its founding in 1945. As an OSCE member state, Belarus is included in the EU's, European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) which aims at bringing the EU and its neighbours closer.
Belarus has a well-regarded education system, including universities and tertiary institutions that attract numerous foreign students. All higher education establishments are governed by the Ministry of Education in Belarus. Belarus has one of the highest student-to-population ratios in Europe. The higher education system in Belarus is seen as prestigious due to its high quality and affordability. In May 2015 Belarus officially joined the Bologna Process – the European Higher Education Area.
